New site design is live

0

I took the lazy route this time around. I made absolutely no code changes to the theme you see before you. I don’t have to, though. This is an extremely powerful WordPress theme that will allow me to make a TON of changes, over time, without ever having to touch any actual code. It’s extremely helpful to me as my interest in web design and coding dwindles from what it once was.

Let me know what you guys and gals think and what you miss or want to see. I really plan on breathing a ton of life back into this site and I thought a redesign would be a perfect way to show that dedication. Thanks god that WordPress and digitalnature made it so easy.

For those of you who may miss the column with a categorical break down of recent posts, I must warn you now that it’s not coming back. It’s getting more and more difficult to classify my posts with one word. Tags, which you have seen on the site for a while now, are much more flexible and indicative of the overall gist of each and every post. Give it some time before hating it.

Twitter blog posts not working

0

Still on vacation, but I just wanted to let you know that I’ve noticed that the daily summaries of my Twitter posts aren’t appearing, but I have no idea why. Being limited to a phone, I can’t fix it now, sorry. You can follow my Twitter posts on the right side, though, or via Facebook. Sorry, folks.

Slight reorganization

0

I’ve started work on reorganizing the site to separate content better and, perhaps, allow me to post more content that will bring in more visitors.

The first change is a pretty simple one. I created a new category called “Tech Talk” where I can post random tech news without throwing it into the rather generic “General” category. I hope to begin posting little tech tidbits, here and there, about random things that interest me. I won’t be posting news or anything, so don’t expect to see that here.

I’ve also, once again, switched around the category listing in the first column on the right. I put the “Journal” and “Tech Talk” categories up top since I believe most people coming here will be looking there. I’ve also taken the “Lyrics” listing out of the column, though a link still exists to the category in the right most column.

Any more ideas, boys and girls?

Limitations of such a small site

I’m a guy who loves to voice his opinion about everything. That’s really not a secret. Surprisingly enough, though, not only do I enjoy doing it, but people seem to be entertained by what I have to say. Whether it be people at work or visitors to Neowin, people always seem to react to my opinions because I like to dress them up and put on a show. That’s what this site is supposed to be about. A whole place dedicated to my opinions and thoughts and emotions. The problem is that nobody really knows this place exists.

This is all stemming from recent discussions about Neowin and my last Bang On column which was posted exclusively on this site for the first time. It made sense, after leaving Neowin, to keep going with my more popular work and try to draw more visitors to my neck of the woods. It didn’t really work out as I had hoped and there was only an insignificant bump in numbers for a day or two. It was really disheartening.

I’m at a crossroads with all of this. The more I think about it, the more I feel as though it’s impossible to mix my interests and thoughts on technology and my personal life on one site. Most people don’t want to read my poems or journals and the few people who do are probably not interested in any techno babble. I can try to cram it all together and keep failing or I can figure out a better solution. Unfortunately, besides creating a second site and draining myself creatively, I have nothing.

For the few of you who do visit: Any ideas? I want to make it work and I want to include more tech talk here, but how do I mix the two worlds without alienating either one? I was considering, for starters, creating a “Tech Talk” category. Good?

Another goodbye to Neowin

It’s never an easy decision and the first go round didn’t actually last all that long, but I’ve decided to leave Neowin, again.

There’s really not much to say about it, to be honest. I haven’t been writing any news, as I’ve mentioned before, and my recent health issues have really sapped away any motivation I would normally have to write. When I do get the urge to write, I want it to be on this site, even if it is for free and won’t get many views. I want to see what I can do here as far as mixing my person life with my general viewpoints and see if I can attract more visitors. I’m already considering posting a “Bang On” column here, once I actually find something to rant about.

Thanks to Mike, by the way. He and I used to clash a lot, but we’ve since overcome that and he dealt with a lot of heat for supporting my usually controversial columns.

Killed the mobile version

1

I decided to remove the mobile version of this site.

If you weren’t aware, if you used a cell phone or similar device to browse this site, you would be presented with a cut back version that was designed to make it easier to load and read on small screens. However, with the general public moving towards using full browsers on their mobile devices, it seemed a bit silly to deliver such a bland page. Now, whether on the desktop or a connected mobile device, you will get the same page and the same experience. Don’t worry; my rants are amazing on screens of all sizes.

New on the outside, but same chewy inside

No, you haven’t screwed up your bookmarks. I got bored and decided to change up the design of the site. It took a while to find a theme I was ok with, but then I just had to modify it a bit and bada bing.

I hope you guys and girls enjoy the new look. It’s a little simpler, but it gives me a lot more room to work with in terms of content, both in the main section and in the sidebars. If you have any criticisms or such, let me hear about it in the comments. Thanks
