Miss those days of play

I’ve been thinking a lot about it lately and I really miss those days of playing outside for hours on end with Joe. Life was so much easier back then and, yet, so much more exciting.

We tended to focus on three different sports: basketball, baseball, and frisbee. Basketball was the most competitive. Heading to the park to play 4 or 5 or sometimes even 7 games. More often than not, Joe won because I was simply over powered, but it was a damn exciting time getting out the competitive bug.

Baseball was our most relaxed sport. We mostly just had a catch every so often and then, once baseball season started, we’d play every day until our elbows hurt from over extending ourselves. Boys being boys.

Frisbee was an odd obsession that became crazy because of our spin on it. We were slightly obsessed for that one year. Every single day we’d be out there trying to break our own record of consecutive catches. It started with 17 and wound up at 420 on April 20th. No joking. It was fun to watch, too, as a few neighbors would spend some of their time just sitting there and watching us fling this plastic disc back and forth as we ran into and over cars trying to catch it.

I miss those days. I want to go outside and chase a frisbee because I want to prove to myself that I’m better than I was yesterday.

A collection of random thoughts

I don’t have anything worth talking about that could fill an entire post, so I’m just throwing random thoughts out there. You ready? Can you dig it?

I’m getting a bit fed up with MLB 2K9. It’s just too easy to hit home runs. In a game between my roommate Chris and I, we managed to hit a total of 12 home runs. In a game he played online against some random person, the two of them managed to hit 15, with each having more home runs than base hits. Ridiculous. Between the home run fest and the frame rate slow downs near foul territory, it can be a bit frustrating at times.

My new phone, the AT&T Fuze, isn’t perfect. I’m having a hard time with battery life lately. I can’t even get through the day with it, regardless of how heavy my usage may be. The GPS is also extremely slow to lock on, though an upcoming fix from AT&T is expected. Either way, I love the phone, but I can easily acknowledge that it’s not perfect.

My rib is almost completely healed. I rarely feel any pain in it unless I accidentally lay down on that side and lay on my elbow. I can’t wait to get out and actually play some basketball. I need the competition.

I finally watched “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. It’s a good movie, but I think some people really over hype it due to it’s age. Half of the punches thrown in the movie look pathetically fake and some of the acting from the smaller roles is just sadly pathetic. Maybe the film just hasn’t aged well. I’m just not sure.

Minor changes in life

I’ve been making some minor changes in my life. I thought I’d share. Lucky you.

Firstly, I’ve decided to let my black nails go. It’s not an easy choice, but I think I’m past that phase of my life, finally. It’s not significant to anyone besides myself, but it is what it is. I’m sure Yogi Bera would be proud of that line.

I’ve also decided to cut all spending for the next two months, at least, as much as I can. After my purchase, and subsequent review, of MLB 2K9, I’m done. I need to start saving again and this is the only way I know how. Melanie has been supportive, though I hope she and her parents can tolerate us going out to paid activities less for a little while. It’s just something I have to do as I struggle to make ends meet. It’s the economy we live in, I guess.

My favorite season

My favorite season is right around the corner. It’s not spring or summer, it’s baseball season.

Ok, that was a little retarded, but, seriously, I love baseball and I can’t wait for the new season to start. I never really got into football or basketball like most other guys I know. I just prefer baseball. It’s a bit more methodical and artistic, in many ways. Plus, nothing beats being at Yankee Stadium when Mariano Rivera comes running out of the bullpen while “Enter Sandman” is blasting over the PA system. It can sends chills down your spine.

Believe it or not, the hype really begins this weekend. The fantasy baseball league that I run, over at Neowin, has its live draft Saturday at 2pm. Then, three days later, MLB 2k9 comes out and both my roommate and I plan on getting it so we can have spend the next couple of months competing like morons. Then, on April 6th, the Yankees begin their season and I will be right here in my room, wearing the Paul O’Neill Jersey that Melanie bought me for Christmas, watching the game in glorious HD. I just serious hope House, Heroes, and One Tree Hill aren’t on that day.

Before I go, I’ll throw out a slightly unknown fact about me. One reason that I haven’t mentioned to many people for loving baseball would be the fact that it also signals the impending warmer weather. I hate the winter. I hate the cold. My skinny ass isn’t built to handle weather like this. The warmer weather means a happier me and I kind of like being happy.
